Not dead, merely humbled. That thud and groan is a player dropping into crawl mode with a full inventory and no dignity left. Fortnite's knockdown system invented a very specific emotional state: still technically alive, entirely helpless, and dependent on whether a teammate rates your chances. There lies the sound's real utility. Play it for partial defeats everywhere, from the argument you lost but survived to the Monday you are visibly dragging yourself through. Somebody can still revive you. Whether they choose to is the actual battle royale.
