About the Metal Gear Alert (!) sound
Two notes and an exclamation mark, and Solid Snake's entire evening is ruined. Konami's 1998 alert sting is one of the most efficient pieces of storytelling in games: a guard's head turns, the symbol appears, the music changes — all before you have finished processing what went wrong. Nothing else says being noticed quite so economically. Play it when somebody catches you mid-snack at three in the morning, when a manager walks behind your screen, or when eye contact happens at the worst conceivable moment. Stealth failed. Alert phase initiated.
