About the Dial-Up Modem sound
Thirty seconds of shrieking negotiation stood between you and the internet, and none of it could happen while somebody was on the telephone. What sounds like machine screaming is actually a conversation: two modems exchanging tones to agree on speed, then measuring the line quality before settling into that final wash of static. Anyone who lived through it has the whole sequence memorised, including the exact point where you knew the connection had failed. For everyone else it is inexplicable noise from a period when getting online was a household event.
OriginThe 56k modem connection handshake.
