About the Windows 95 Startup sound
Microsoft commissioned this from Brian Eno with a brief asking for something inspiring, universal and optimistic, plus a hard length limit of three and a quarter seconds. He made eighty-four versions before settling on one. The chime that shipped in 1995 opens on a shimmering major chord and remains the most artful piece of music any operating system has ever booted with. For anybody who owned a beige tower it is pure sense-memory: dial-up in the next room, a CRT warming up, an entire afternoon still ahead of you.
