About the Mario Jump sound
Springy and rising and unmistakable, the boing that launched roughly a billion platforming attempts in 1985 and every year since. It does something subtle. The pitch sweep gives the jump a sense of effort at the start and lightness at the top, so the sound tells you about the arc before you see it. Applying it to real-world hops upgrades them instantly into gameplay. Use it for anything leaving the ground — cats onto counters, toddlers off sofas, a share price shortly before it discovers gravity. Forty years old and still full of air.
OriginThe jump sound from Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo, 1985).
