About the Pac-Man Death sound
That descending warble has been signalling failure since 1980, making it one of the oldest fail sounds still in regular use anywhere. Toru Iwatani's arcade cabinet had almost nothing to work with. The death sound is a simple downward sweep. It lands as deflation rather than disaster, which suits a yellow circle being caught by a ghost. Play it for defeats that feel retro, inevitable and slightly self-inflicted, particularly the ones where you could see the corridor was a bad idea and went down it anyway.
OriginThe death sound from Pac-Man (Namco, 1980).
